We would like to appoint an artist or artist collective to work collaboratively on three of the schemes in Caernarfon, to ensure coherence and consistency of artistic approach throughout and between the developments. Ideally we would like to see the artist:

•influencing the design teams, having input into existing designs and ideas, ensuring that artistic intervention is considered an integral part of the development process
designing alterations or additions to the existing designs, adding value to essential or functional elements and materials
•collaborating local artists to make artistic interventions across the schemes.
contributing to the development of participatory public programmes for a range of different audiences.

Scheme 1: The Island Site
The Island Site is a group of buildings situated on the man-made water front of Caernarfon known as Cei Llechi or Slate Quay. The site consists of the Harbour Trust building, which is currently occupied by the Harbour Trust, along with a collection of other separate buildings which have fallen into disrepair and been partially cleared.

The proposed development will bring the Island Site back to life by creating a series of artisan workshops with associated retail outlets together with a small number of holiday lets.

Scheme 2: New station terminus building
With over 100,000 visitors per annum the Welsh Highland Railway terminus is a key gateway to Caernarfon, yet the experience of arriving is let down by the quality of the provision and facilities available there. A Feasibility Study and Concept Designs have been prepared to develop a new terminus building that will provide a much improved visitor experience and provide opportunities to link the station with the heart of the town.

Scheme 3: Access and Linkages
Concept designs for improving the pedestrian links a) from the Castle and Maes down towards the Island Site and also b) between the Island Site and the Railway station are currently out to public consultation.
