There will be an opportunity on the 25th and 26th January for the public to see and comment on the exciting plans now proposed for artisan’s workshops on Slate Quay as part of the ambitious plans to regenerate Caernarfon’s waterfront.

The Caernarfon Harbour Trust’s proposals to bring run-down buildings on Slate Quay back into use involves the creation of 17 units, which will be managed by Galeri Caernarfon Cyf.  In April 2016, the Trust secured a development grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund which, together with funding from the Welsh Government’s Vibrant and Viable Places Tackling Poverty Programmes managed by Cyngor Gwynedd, has enabled detailed business plans and designs to be drawn up to transform this derelict area into a series of workspaces for small scale local artisans and craft manufacturers.  In March, a second- round application for over £3m will be made to the Heritage Lottery Fund, with a decision anticipated in June.

The plans and a digital “walkthrough” of the Island Site, or Cei Llechi, as the development will be called, will be on display in the Caernarfon Harbour Trust offices on Wednesday 25th from 11.00 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. and in Galeri on Thursday, 26th, from 10.30 a.m.– 4.30 p.m.

The Cei Llechi project forms part of a wider £15m scheme for Caernarfon Waterfront Initiative that includes enhancements to Galeri, the development of a new station building for the Welsh Highlands Railway, development of infrastructure links and improvements to Caernarfon Castle’s visitor facilities.

The proposed funding package for the Island Site development includes financial contributions from the Welsh Government’s Vibrant and Viable Places Tacking Poverty Programme and Targeted Match Funding, Heritage Lottery funding, Gwynedd Council and the Caernarfon Harbour Trust.

If all permissions and funding applications are successful, it is hoped that Cei Llechi could be available for tenants to move into by Jan 2020.
